JÖNS: Hållas mellan rona
på en luderkona
det är livsens välbehag

Upptill sitter Herran.
Han är ganska fjärran.
Men din broder Satan

RIDDAREN: Måste du sjunga?
JÖNS: Nej.

JÖNS: I Färjestad talade man om
Järtecken och annan ruskighet.
Två hästar hade ätit varandra under natten
och på kyrkogården hade gravarna öppnats
och de dödas lämningar låg kastade över hela platsen.
Det hade varit fyra solar på himlavalvet
i går eftermiddag.

JÖNS: Kan du säga mig vägen till värdshuset?

RIDDAREN: Visade han vägen?
JÖNS: Inte precis.
RIDDAREN: Vad sa han?
JÖNS: Ingenting just.
RIDDAREN: Var han stum?
JÖNS: Nej herre,
det kan man inte säga.
Han var högeligen vältalig.
Ja vältalig. Men talet han höll var dystert.

JÖNS: Ack ödet är en rackare,
du själv min vän en stackare.
Än du spritter rask,
än du krälar i en mask.

RIDDAREN: Måste du sjunga?
JÖNS: Nej.

JONS: In Frjestad everyone was talking
about evil omens and other horrible things.
Two horses had eaten each other in the night,
and, in the churchyard, graves had been opened
and the remains of corpses scattered all over the place.

Yesterday afternoon there were as many
as four suns in the heavens.

JONS: Can you tell me the way to the inn ?
KNIGHT: Well, did he show you the way?
JONS: Not exactly.
KNIGHT: What did he say?
JONS: Nothing I heard.
KNIGHT: Was he a mute?
JONS: No, sir,
I wouldn't say that.
He was quite eloquent.
Yes, eloquent.
But what he had to say was depressing.

One moment you're bright and lively,
The next you're crawling with worms.
Fate is a terrible villain
And you, my friend, its poor victim.

KNIGHT: Must you sing?
JONS: No.
